Lakewood, WA 4-15-2009 – American Lake Credit Union
joined the American Debt Relief Challenge to save members from
rapidly increasing credit card rates. The American Debt Relief Challenge
measures the savings of consumers here in Lakewood and Tacoma,
for the state of WA and tallies the savings nationally.
"This program works because not-for-profit credit unions
have lower credit card rates than for-profit banks," said
Bob Manning PhD, author of Credit
Card Nation. "When you transfer your debt to a credit
union, more of your monthly payment is applied to reducing the
debt and less to cover a high interest rate."
Countless people across America are burdened by credit card debt
that is defaulting to all time high interest rates. “Corporate
bank default rates are as high as 30%, but average at 26.87%,” said
Manning. The American Debt Relief Challenge was founded to specifically
measure the savings for the millions of Americans burdened by these
default rates, as they are returned to a traditional rate by transferring
their balance to a not-for-profit credit union.
“The families of Lakewood and Tacoma deserve better
than sky-high interest rates and predatory banking practices,” said
M. Earlene Fantz, President/CEO at American Lake Credit Union. “We
will never subject our members to a default rate because we are
here to serve our members, not to maximize profits.”
Many consumers, even consumers with perfect credit scores are
seeing their credit card rates increase for the first time as the
banks respond to the credit crunch. The average American consumer
that switches their credit card balance from a mega-bank default
rate to a traditional rate at American Lake Credit Union will save
about $200 a month, or more than $13,000 over the life of the card. “We
are doing this because we know that $200 can help most families
make their car payment or purchase groceries each month,” said
Fantz.
